i heart my new Kona color chart.

You’ve probably seen this color chart around, and maybe you already have one. I know I was reluctant to buy one… I debated for a long time, then kept convincing myself that I didn’t really need it. I was sure I could keep all my favorite solid color names in my head.

Then I started ordering more and more solids, in a variety of shades, and I finally gave in and bought one. And let me tell you, it’s a wonderful thing! So now I can tell you that the solid white I’m using in the new Strawberries & Champagne quilt is actually ‘snow’, while the white I used in my munki munki martians quilt (to be shown tomorrow!) is ‘natural’. I had no idea.

If you’re thinking about buying a color chart, I got mine from Kathy at Pink Chalk Fabrics.

P.S. She also has a great selection of Kona solids. And she might be the fastest shipper I’ve found! Thanks Kathy!

the start of yet another quilt…

Yep, once again, I’m starting another new quilt. I really should be finishing up some of the others that are currently draped over various pieces of furniture. (It’s hard to find a place to sit down around here lately!) They’re half completed for a reason though – I’m waiting for fabric for sashing for one, thread for another, and for inspiration to hit for a third…

So what’s a girl to do?

I pulled out this stack of fabrics the other day

And made up a few blocks

So far I’m loving it! I smile every time I step over the blocks on my way to the kitchen (that’s the trouble with using the floor as a design wall!) Morgan’s reminded of Neapolitan ice cream, and I keep thinking strawberries & champagne (and chocolate!)… though maybe that won’t be an appropriate name for a baby quilt…

a winner!! and a mini zig zag quilt

Thanks so much for all the wonderful comments on the giveaway post! I’ve had such a nice week reading them over and checking out some new blogs. This morning I used random.org to select the winner of the mini quilt –

winner

#266, Rachel, who is new to quilting and is in the process of building up a fabric stash! I’ve sent you an email Rachel!

And speaking of mini quilts, here’s another I made this week…

zigzagmini

This started out as a test – I had been thinking about zig zags again, and I kept coming back to the idea of a thin white strip between the zig zags. I thought I’d give it a try, so I grabbed a few larger scraps from my scrap bin. As you can see, I managed to get a bit of the thin white zig zag, but when they were sewn together, I lost a bit of the tip of the point of each zig zag in the seam.

It still gives the look I was after though, so I decided to keep going with it and turn it into a mini quilt by adding white to either side of the zig zag section.

The quilting is my favorite part – I started by stitching 1/4″ away from the zig zags in the patterned section. Then to create some interest in the solid white sections, I echoed the zig zag lines 1/4″ apart through most of the white sections. The top portion of white is a larger area, so after doing several quilting lines, I measured out a zig zag section and left that part unquilted. Then I continued with the same zig zag quilting lines all the way to the top edge. (My explanation may not make sense – here’s a photo!)

This little quilt is going to my sister, who plans to make a frame for it and hang it. I’m glad it’ll be nearby so I’ll get to see it!
