a modified bento box quilt

For a little while there I just wasn’t feeling inspired by my fabrics. Then I pulled out this stack and thought that maybe I could do something with them.

Of course, then the dilemma was what to make! I had it in mind to do a modified bento box quilt, so I initially started making large 16″ blocks… but then I kind of liked them as full blocks and wasn’t sure I wanted to chop them into quarters… (I did finally go for it, as you can see below, but I’m thinking that there may be a second quilt done with full blocks, made with these same colors.)

I’m not totally in love with it at the moment. I mean, I do like it, especially now that the top’s finished. And I think it’s fun, in kind of a crazy way. And it’s definitely bold… I think it just might be one of those that I really start liking once it’s completely finished.

I better get working on the back so I can finish it up and start loving it!

Oh, and since a few have asked, there are patterns you can purchase for a bento box quilt. I just googled ‘bento box quilt pattern’ and a few different patterns came up, all around $9. I didn’t use a pattern for this quilt, but since there seems to be interest, I just may do up a quick tutorial for you… (note to self – remember to take photos during the project!)

it’s time for a picnic!

This quilt is kind of different than most of the other quilts I’ve completed – mainly because there’s no white in this one (no solid white, anyway…). I selected this group of fabrics and while they’re not my typical go-to colors, I really love the combo!

picnicstripes-front

Much of it is made up of the great fabrics from Anna Maria Horner’s Good Folks line (love!) and rather than use solid white, I included a few prints on white – a few of the white cake rock beach prints and the oh so cute Alexander Henry spotted owls on white. There are a few others mixed in and several solids in coordinating colors.

I went for strips of varying widths, and pieced in a few blocks of other prints to add some extra interest. When I took it out to photograph the top a few weeks ago, I thought it looked so good outside that I thought I might use it as a picnic quilt. Never mind that I can’t remember the last time I went on a picnic — maybe having a picnic quilt will change that! Since I thought I might use it outside, I opted for a darker solid for the back, but spiced it up a bit with a few patchwork strips.

As for the quilting, I so enjoyed the straight and curved random lines on the mini quilt I made last week that I decided to do something similar… although it certainly wasn’t as easy with a quilt of this size! The lines wobble a bit here and there, but I’m ok with it…

I went with a nice navy binding, and I’m very pleased with the final result. I’ve taken to bringing it with me when we go anywhere, just in case I find myself wanting to lay on the grass!

another weekend sewing project

The weekend away travel bag (from Heather Ross’ Weekend Sewing)… sometimes it’s nice to do a small, quick project! Lately I haven’t been doing much sewing – either I’m having quilter’s block (is there such a thing?), or it’s simply the start of summer…

In any case, I’ve had a fear of zippers, so I thought I’d try out this pattern to see if I could get over it. I’m pleased to say that it was surprisingly easy — fun, even! I like that there are only 3 pattern pieces and it really does come together quickly and relatively easily.

I went for this great Etsuko print for the outside (love those pigs!), paired with the blue stripes from the new Lizzy House Red Letter Day line. I just now took a look at the Flickr pool for Heather’s book, and was so surprised to see someone else had made this exact same bag in the exact same fabrics! Must be a good fabric pairing!
