Honey Be Good giveaway

Happy Friday, and a happy 4th to all of you in the US! The blog has been a bit quiet recently – mostly due to the summer and, um, those kids… they don’t seem to like me spending my time sewing (0r blogging about it!). Weird. We also unexpectedly decided to sell our home, which of course is stressful, and not so much fun. Sewing is taking a bit of a back seat, consequently.

But today? Today we have a fun giveaway from one of my sponsors, Honey Be Good. Karen sells all the best organic fabrics and supplies. New in the shop? This great organic line by Carolyn Gavin for Windham Fabrics, Petite Fleur.

I had a chance to make up a couple tops a few months back, and it’s really lovely. I made Hazel a cute little baby popover

and a coordinating adult popover for myself (the faces I make while wearing my popover are not as cute, so luckily you’re spared!).

I wear this one quite a bit – I think this print works well for a top – from afar it’s kind of just a navy/white graphic print, which I like. I’ve tried to move from quilting cotton for clothing for myself, but this organic cotton is quite nice, especially as a button down/popover (the Grainline Archer pattern would be a great one if you were looking for a similar button down look).

Today Karen is giving away a fat quarter bundle of the Petite Fleur line plus the included alphabet panel. This giveaway is open to US customers. A Make It Perfect pattern parade!

I was so happy when Toni asked me to be part of her pattern parade to show off some of the great patterns offered by her pattern company, Make It Perfect. I think that her Shearwater Kaftan was one of the first garments I ever made, way back in 2010! I was still new to sewing then, and clothing seemed way out of my league. I somehow stumbled upon Toni’s patterns and was immediately drawn to her Shearwater Kaftan – in fact, I liked it so much I made my version out of the very same Nani Iro shown on the pattern cover!

I remember exclaiming to anyone who would listen that I had made a shirt, and that it had sleeves! Since then I made several more, so when I was asked to select a pattern for the pattern parade, it was a no-brainer to ask for her mini Shearwater Kaftan which was recently released for kids.

Once again I reached for the Nani Iro and made up not one, but two (actually three! though the last wasn’t completed in time) cute new summery tops for Hazel.

I love that the mini version so closely resembles the ones I’ve made – cute little slit at the neck, side splits and even sleeve tabs (don’t look too closely at mine – while I did manage to get button holes made, I was unable to find my button stash in time!)

I love how they turned out and look forward to seeing Hazel in them this summer!

A Maze & Vale converging corners quilt top

The other day, while avoiding all those quilts that need quilting, I thought it’d be a good idea to put these little scraps of Maze & Vale fabrics to use. I’ve collected these lovely hand printed fabrics for a long time now, and recently made a large quilt top out of them (I haven’t had a chance to show it here yet – was hoping to get it in a magazine, but no luck!).

Anyway, I had lots of little pieces left over and I’ve had it in my head for a while now that I wanted to see how my converging corners quilt would look made up out of lower volume prints. I love how this pattern looks with bold and bright prints (this one is still a favorite), but I thought it might be interesting to see how it might look if there was only a hint of the pattern (I also thought it might be a disaster – I’m happy that I ended up loving the look!)

This pattern is not necessarily a super quick one – there are lots of seams and piecing together small pieces of fabrics, which can get a bit tedious. Since I only had a small amount of fabrics left, I opted for smaller 8″ blocks to make up this 30″ square wall hanging.

I’m really happy with how it turned out. You can actually see the pattern quite well from afar, but I might like the up close look even more – all those special little hand printed pieces!
