a tiny quilt in folksy flannel

I don’t use a lot of flannel, but I just couldn’t resist the super soft Anna Maria Horner Folksy Flannels. So, so soft, and with such cute prints!

I only had a small amount of a couple of the prints, so I decided to make a really simple tiny little quilt (what else would I make, really?!) I haven’t ever quilted with flannel, so it was more of an experiment than anything else…

On the front I used this adorable print with the little houses, along with a strip of the yellow print which is also used on the backing.

It’s quilted simply, with little loops. It’s really not very visible, but cute, if you look close. The binding is a berry colored solid.

It measures about 22″ x 24″… tiny, but would probably make a great soft security blanket for a little one, or maybe a nice doll quilt, or perhaps even a little changing mat (it’s soft and cushy, and washable!). For sale here. (and since it was made as a test, it’s priced accordingly!) Sold, thanks Darcy!

a new design wall (and other weekend scenes)

design-wall

Up until now, my design wall has been the floor. I didn’t mind it so much, though sometimes it made getting through the house challenging – trying to jump over the various quilt pieces without disturbing their placement. I knew a design wall would be helpful, but since I do all my sewing at the dining room table, right in the middle of our house, I just couldn’t commit to draping a very visible wall with quilt batting.

So here’s my solution… instead of covering the entire wall, I decided to make it slightly smaller so that I could frame it, which hopefully makes it look more like a framed piece of art.

We got all the supplies at Lowe’s – we used 1″ thick styrofoam (a 4′ x 8′ sheet), and bought several pieces of wood which we Morgan stained. I covered the styrofoam with white quilt batting, and Morgan built the frame. And I just love the result! It’s so fun to have ever-changing art!

We also did a bit of Christmas decorating…

The stockings were hung,

and we decided at the last minute to get a Christmas tree.

It was slim pickings since we were kind of late in getting one, so this one is a bit short, sparse, and strangely shaped… but I think that’s what makes me like it even more.

Plus, it gave me a reason to pull out the Christmas tree skirt!

i couldn’t resist. (buying more fabric)

Well, we’re back from Florida. It was nice to get away, and even nicer to be in a warm, sunny climate. We both were working though, so it was less of a vacation and more of just an opportunity to be warm. It certainly was no fun to return to the 7 degree temps of Vermont.

I was happy to return to my sewing machine though, and also to a pile of new fabrics. When I go away and I can’t sew, I tend to shop…

I just couldn’t resist the new Anna Maria Horner Little Folks voile –

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but now I’m totally in love. I laughed when I kept reading on other blogs about how people just wanted to touch this fabric, but it’s totally true. You’ll want to do the same thing. Trust me. I don’t have any specific plans for it, but even if it just sits in a pile looking pretty, that would be fine with me! Purchased from Charlie and Lindsay at Hawthorne Threads.

And of course I couldn’t resist replenishing my Hope Valley stash…

I needed some extras for my orange and purple Hope Valley quilt, and I got a bit more of the blues and grays for another quilt I have in mind. I purchased some yardage from Kathy at Pink Chalk Fabrics, and some from Kerri at Sew Deerly Loved.

And lastly, solids. Of course. You know I never tire of them.

Half of these are Kona cottons, and the other half are Moda Bella Solids.

Now I just wish I had time to sew!
