moonlight in the trees quilt

moonlight3

Now, before you start feeling bad for us thinking that Spring is never coming to Vermont, let me reassure you that it is. Not as fast as it’s coming for those of you in other parts, but we have had a few spring-like days recently. These photos were taken about a month ago during (hopefully!) the last snowstorm of the winter. (watch, now that I said that…)

moonlight

Anyway, the quilt! I posted photos of the top of it here. It’s made of the beautiful voile fabrics from Anna Maria Horner’s Little Folks, in the moonlight palette. I think this color palette is just gorgeous! And you already know how much joy I get from simple patchwork squares. I really never tire of them.

For the backing, I decided to add a little extra purple, so I went with two plum-colored solids and a strip of the voile.

moonlightback

I quilted it with a grid pattern on the diagonal using a light gray thread and I went with a darker purple for the binding. It measures approximately 48″ x 56″ and it’s for sale in the shop.

A good selection of the voile fabrics can still be found at Hawthorne Threads and at Fabricworm.

Kona solids used: Plum & Woodrose for the backing, Garnet for the binding.

hexagon winners

Wow! Thanks for all the great comments on the hexagon giveaway! You kept me thoroughly entertained during my layover. I think it’s pretty funny how many of you think that the basting part is the less fun part, while I think the opposite. It’s making me rethink it though – all those comments, and all the love for hexagons has encouraged me to give the handsewing another try. I might (maybe!) attempt a pillow out of the hexagons I have left (those that match the manly quilt I’m making). Don’t hold your breath though. It could be a while. Speaking of pillows, I was amazed and touched by those of you who so generously offered to make me that pillow cover I’ve been wanting…. you all are too sweet!

So, I made a few more hexagons while on the plane… it really does pass the time quite nicely! The other benefit of it is all the people you’ll meet in the airport or on the plane when you pull out some handsewing (though I think maybe some of those people were more curious how I got my scissors on board!). I ended up with a fair number of hexagons, so I decided to let random.org pick two winners…

Lucky #137 & #221!!

Strangely enough, when I went looking for those commenters, I found that they are both people I ‘know’ from the online world!

#137 is Emily. I actually had a chance to meet Emily in person just recently while I was in California. I got to attend a meeting of the LA Modern Quilt Guild and Emily was there with her camera in hand and a beautiful quilt she had just finished. Hi Emily!!

and #221 is Sarah, who was part of the Block Party quilting bee, which was the first quilting bee I was in. (oops, my bad…wrong Sarah!) I know Sarah a bit from several emails we exchanged while she was doing a lot of work with the Craft Hope for Haiti shop. She’s soon to have a new baby girl and commented that a little hexagon pillow would be perfect for her bed.

Thanks again to all who commented!

Happy weekend!

flea market fancy hexagon giveaway

It’s been a long time since the last giveaway… we ought to remedy that, right?

hexagons

This is kind of silly, and maybe some of you won’t be interested, but remember those hexagons? I love making them, (and I’ll probably continue making more!) but it turns out that I don’t like sewing them together…

It’s sad, because I’ve seen such lovely hexagon projects on other blogs and on flickr (and I really wanted a hexagon pillow!), but I guess my patience for handsewing just isn’t there. At the rate I’m going, I really don’t think I’ll ever get to the point of having a finished hexagon project.

hexagons2

Anyway, that’s where you come in. I have this stack of hexagons made out of lots of prints from the Flea Market Fancy line… anyone want them? I’m sure there’s someone out there who does have the ability and patience to sew them into something really wonderful. (or if not, maybe you just want the FMF fabric – you’re also welcome to just remove the basting stitches and you’ll have small squares of FMF)

hexagons3

To enter, leave a comment here letting me know what you think of hexagons – (have you tried making any?, do you like them?, how do you feel about handsewing? etc…), and maybe what you’d make out of these hexagons if you won. We’re heading back home from California today and I’ll be sitting in the airport for a good part of the day, so your comments will keep me entertained. I’ll pick a winner on Thursday…

__

These hexagons are 1 1/4″, and I should also note that I cut out the paper hexagon shapes by hand, so I can’t absolutely guarantee that they’re all perfectly exact. I did my best though, so hopefully they’ll fit together as they should!!

Oh, and of course international entries are accepted!

Thanks for all your wonderful comments! Comments are now closed and I’ll pick and announce a winner tomorrow morning!
