Spring in a quilt?

It’s supposed to be Spring, right? The sad dirty piles of snow still lingering outside our door make me think that’s not so. We had one semi-Spring like day the other day and we spent the day sitting outside exclaiming how nice it was not to have to wear coats, hats and mittens. Sadly, the next day it was once again chilly, windy and rainy, so I decided to pull together some Spring-like fabrics for a quick quilt. If it’s not going to be Spring outdoors, perhaps it can be inside? We’ll see.

I love these pretty florals from Leah Duncan’s new line Meadow, and I found a couple prints from Pat Bravo’s Rapture line that paired quite nicely. I added in a few other basics, and I’m really happy with how it’s looking. I’m thinking of sewing it up into a quick plus quilt for a new little cousin. And until I get it finished, I’ll be admiring it and hoping Spring will come soon!

Hazel – 9 months

hazel9months

Oh Hazel! What a sweet baby. At 9 months Hazel is fast! She’s pulling herself up on everything and wanting desperately to walk. She learned to climb stairs last month and it’s her current favorite activity. Luckily Max acts as a very strict gate keeper.

There’s lots of baby talk, and Max likes to think she’s practicing saying “Max”. He is her favorite person, so it wouldn’t surprise me if his name was her first word.

These two. (It’s a good thing they’re cute – they certainly can be a challenge some days!)

a feather bed quilt in indigo

featherbed4

I had a lot of fun making this quilt, which is kind of strange, since I’m generally not a fan of making quilts from patterns. I have loved Anna Maria’s Feather Bed quilt since she first posted about it, and though it’s often been on my mind, I’ve never had the right stack of fabric.

As soon as I put together this one, full of lots of navy (a color I feel I’ve overlooked), some aquas and greeny-blues, a little sour lemon, a bit of orangey-red, and that beautiful Liberty of London floral print (Manuela, for those who asked). Making the feathers themselves was a pretty quick process – each half is cut from a few strip pieced sections and so you can very quickly amass lots of feather halves. I second guessed my background choice for a bit – the Robert Kaufman Essex yarn dyed linen in indigo – but I’m happy that I stuck with my original selection.

I planned on making a twin size, which uses 38 feathers, but somehow I failed to count correctly and thought I was all set after making 30. At that point, thinking I was already done, I didn’t feel like making 8 more feathers, so a large throw it is. We don’t have a twin sized bed anyway, so I suppose it all works out!
