I always love making quilts when I know who the recipient will be, and it’s especially fun when said recipient is a new baby, so this quilt for a neighbor and friend’s brand new baby boy was a joy to make!

I had it in mind keep it pretty modern and thought shades of grays would be appropriate. Though after cutting a bunch of gray triangles I was afraid it might be looking a bit depressing for a little baby. Rather than scrapping the idea, I decided to try adding a few more fabrics and added in some more black and white prints and the blue and red solids. I think it added enough color and bit of whimsy to make it feel appropriate for a little one.

There are a lot of favorite prints in there, and it was fun to actually use them! The black heart on white print is a favorite from Maze & Vale, which I purchased from Salty Oat (looks like it’s gone now, but this bundle would be a great substitution!). I also got to use this Umbrella Prints print, an old Yoshiko Jinzenji print, and a bit of Carolyn Friedlander’s Doe fabric.

The pattern is one I’ve made a couple times previously. I never came up with a catchy name for this pattern, so I always refer to it as ‘pointy triangles’, but really it deserves better than that! I first made it out of Cotton + Steel, then again in Lotta Jansdotter’s Follie. Windham Fabrics calls it Carnival, and has a free pattern for it on their site, in case you’re interested!

I used Robert Kaufman’s Essex linen in black for the backing, which gives it a nice weight, and kept the quilting simple with straight lines on either side of all seams.

a Friday giveaway from Stash Fabrics

Hello there! I’m here today with a generous giveaway from Stash Fabrics. Stash Fabrics is a somewhat new advertiser here, so I thought we should spend some time getting to know them!

Stash Fabrics is a small online business out of Georgia, owned and operated by Beth, who like so many of us, has a love of modern fabrics. Stash Fabrics sell modern quilting cotton, apparel fabric and home decor fabrics by the yard (with a minimum of a 1/4 yard cut), but also offer bundles and precuts by collection as well as custom curated bundles. They even carry all 303 colors of Kona Cotton!

And speaking of Kona, their newest fabric club is a Kona Club and starts shipping in September (they also offer other fabric clubs, which you can see here!) This club will take a trip around the color wheel each month and at the end of the year, participants will have amassed a selection of nearly half of the Kona colors in either fat quarters or half yards. Plus if you sign up before September 1st and stay in the club for the full 12 months, they will send a color card along for free with your 12th shipment! As far as shopping goes, there are a few things that are important to me, and Stash Fabrics has them nailed – free shipping over $50, great photos of the fabrics, and a site that’s easy to navigate. I love how clean their site is, and I think it’s fabulous that there are so many different ways to search for fabrics, since we all have our favorite way of browsing! One feature I particularly like is the ability to search by color, and the option to find coordinating prints by color. I don’t always search this way, but it sure is helpful when you’re looking for other prints in a specific hue.

Action Kivu Fundraiser

I’m always so pleased to be able to post and spread the word about the Action Kivu fundraiser. This is the 6th year for this fundraiser, organized by Alissa Haight Carlton. Action Kivu works with women and children of the Congo who have been victims of the conflict in Eastern Congo. Part of how they help is by financing a sewing workshop, teaching women how to sew and consequently how to provide an income for their families.

If you have a minute, this blog post on the Action Kivu site is definitely worth a read (and the video worth a watch!). It’s truly amazing to see the excitement on the faces of the women who have completed the sewing course as they are given their certificate and new sewing machine, knowing that they can now help support themselves and their families. Please consider donating so that they can continue and expand these programs to help change even more lives.
