the bedroom gets a makeover

It was supposed to rain here last weekend, so we figured it would be a good painting weekend (the weathermen were wrong, by the way…). Our bedroom was the only room we didn’t paint when we bought this place. It was painted a gold color, and while it wouldn’t have been my top pick for a bedroom color, it was ok enough to not require an immediate change.

However, during my ‘fabric as wall art’ craze, we covered a large frame with this great Marimekko print, Tuuli. The panel shows a tree in chocolate brown on a white background. And it really didn’t go well with the existing wall color!

I was looking for a color which I continually referred to as “spa blue” though I was hard pressed to actually describe what that color would look like. (I think I was trying to find a blue with some green/yellow tones.) I never quite found that color, but I do like what we ended up with (Rainwashed by Sherwin Williams, in case anyone’s interested!).

It’s really made the room look larger, brighter, and more airy. A nice change, for sure.

A Fall-Colored Zig Zag Quilt

I’m almost afraid to say this, but I started another quilt.

I realize that I should actually finish one of the many I’ve already started, but I just couldn’t help myself. It was this tutorial posted on a quilt is nice which caused me to start this one. I’ve always admired Nettie’s quilts, especially her zig zag baby quilts, but never thought it would be one I’d try, since it looked like it required a lot of cutting and piecing. I loved the method she described in the tutorial though, and figured I’d give it a try.

I had some Heather Ross prints in my stash, so I opted to follow her lead and make a baby quilt. I also added some small floral yellow and brown prints, giving it a fall look.

This is a portion of it laid out on the floor so I could decide on the order of patterns.

And here’s the finished quilt top

Now this is what you may be surprised by… I went a step further and actually completed the back of the quilt as well! I used some of the fabrics I had left over, along with all the remaining squares I hadn’t used.

And quess what? I think I’m actually going to take the plunge and quilt it!

A new fall bag & a tasty fall treat

After my success with the Amy Butler bag pattern, I thought I’d attempt another. I’ve had this bag tutorial by machen/machen on my list for a while now, and since I’m on a bag kick, I thought I’d give it a try. Things started well, but then kind of went downhill. It did end up looking like a bag, though not quite the bag pictured in the tutorial! (If you want to see what it should have looked like, check out all the lovely examples in this flickr pool.)

I opted to use this lovely Anna Maria Horner fabric, Volumes. It’s a home dec weight fabric and from the first time I saw it, I could imagine a bag made out of it. I used some Amy Butler lime polka dots for the lining.

I followed the first half of the tutorial, then finished it my own way. I almost scrapped the whole thing at one point (I wasn’t loving the way it was looking), but I’m glad I completed it, as I really like the way it turned out! This one may take the place of my Echino Polka Dot bag – more of a fall look, don’t you think?

And now, a completely unrelated side note, but completely appropriate for the season –

Anyone up for a new way to eat candy corn?

You simply need to mix a little of this

with a little of this

and you end up with a really tasty treat which is sweet and salty and when you eat them together, it tastes just like a Baby Ruth bar. Yum!
