Sea Flower Stripes Quilt Top

Whit, this post is for you.

I got a bit of grief from my sister about the picture in yesterday’s post. Apparently she did not care for the photo I used, which really didn’t show much (and yes, that was intentional!) I had to laugh though, since she had actually already seen the start of that quilt in person… in any case, I completed the top last night and now can take a better photo. So Whit, here you are!

The weather in Vermont is getting cooler, and there’s been less and less sun, which makes the outdoor photography a tad more difficult. Add to that some wind, and you have a photo like the one above!

You can tell I’m stuck on these colors – can’t seem to get away from the orange and browns – but I guess it’s appropriate for the season. For this quilt I used mainly Heather Ross prints – several in the blush and orange colors from the new Mendocino line as well as a few of the florals from an older line. I added a few Amy Butler prints (polka dots, of course!) and some solid white to round it out.

I wanted to do stripes, but with a twist. I opted for this design, and I like the way it turned out. I cut strips of fabrics in 1″ to 3″ widths and then randomly sewed them together. I cut each to a 10″ square and then sewed the blocks together, alternating the direction of the strips.

I hope to get this one finished this weekend!

One quilt, two quilts

I’ve never been a one project kind of girl. Sometimes I try, but I always seem to revert back to my crazy ways. If you were to look at the floor of my craft room right now, you’d see the beginnings of three quilts. And then if you looked in the guest room, you’d find three more quilts that I started and then draped over the bed. They’ve been there for a couple months now.

I think it’s new fabrics and the thought of a new project that make me behave this way… although I also love a completed quilt, so you’d think I’d try to follow it all the way through. Ah, in time.

This is a quick peek of two new projects. They’re taking up a lot of room on the floor and it makes getting into this room kind of difficult – hopefully that will be motivation to get them sewn together and off the floor! (though I will admit that my mind is already onto the next design!)

Blocks and Stripes Quilt – Completed!

Phew! That was a lot of sewing in a short amount of time. This was my first attempt at free motion quilting, and I love the way it turned out. I won’t say it wasn’t difficult, because it was, but it was worth it. I imagine it will become easier with more practice. I have to figure out a better way to sit and maneuver the quilt though – I ended up with a really sore right arm, so I must be doing something wrong (I’ve never heard anyone complain about sore muscles from quilting…)

Here it is fresh from the dryer –

This quilt used random sized squares and rectangles framed with stripes of fabric. It incorporates a lot of my favorite fabrics (all leftover scraps!), and a variety of designers. Since I’m loving orange, and since many of the fabrics used on the top had some orange in them, I opted for the Amy Butler Full Moon Polka Dot in Tangerine for the binding. I think it gives it a fun look, and a change from the browns I’ve been using for other bindings.

The back is predominately white, with one section similar to the front, though made with smaller blocks.

This one measures about 60″ x 48″, so it’s a bit bigger than the other two I’ve completed.

Love that crinkly look!

You can bet I’ll be laying under this one on the couch tonight!
