Mini log cabin blocks

Phew! Back home again, and back to a little sewing. I found I had a pile of scraps on my craft table (I mean, our dining room table!) so I decided to make up a few mini log cabin improv blocks. I had fun making small log cabin blocks that I used in the blocks I made for Alissa, and I thought that perhaps I’d make up a bunch and use them for a quilt. I only have 5 done so far, so there will be many more to make before I have enough for a quilt (they’re only 4″ square), but it’s fun to use up scraps and make up these really cute little blocks!

Looks like I need to make some with yellow and blue – most of my scraps seem to be pink and green…

a quick hello from Florida

I’ve been in Florida for a couple days trying to get some details nailed down for our wedding. We’re still lacking a location for the ceremony and someone to perform the ceremony, but I’m happy to say that we now have a location for the lunch after the ceremony and we also now have flights so that we will actually be in attendance at our own wedding – good idea, right? I procrastinated far too long, trying to find the absolute best deal. I hope someone will remind me next time that it’s not worth the extra stress!

It’s hard to be without my sewing machine (is that sad?). I’ve been checking out everyone else’s sewing projects online, but it’s not quite the same. To make myself feel like I was still part of the sewing community, I bought a couple pieces of fabric…

It didn’t exactly work, but I have pulled them out to look at them more than I’d care to admit! Ah, fabric!

I have a sewing project to work on for the wedding when I return home, and then we’re headed back to Florida in mid-February for about a month, so I’m afraid this blog will be kind of boring for a while…

two blocks for alissa

January is Alissa‘s month for the Block Party quilting bee. She sent out some great fabrics – a nice mix of orange, brown and aqua – and I had a great time making these blocks. She requested wonky log cabins… and here’s what I came up with –

I don’t want to tell you how long I spent on these… let’s just say it was longer than I expected. It seems as though making individual quilt blocks can take some time, especially when you’re making them for someone else (and you want to make sure they’re as perfect as you can make them!)

This is the first one I made

I love that little mini log cabin block in the bottom left.

I had a different idea for the second, but as I was sewing pieces together, it just turned into this instead.

I’m happy with the way they turned out, and I certainly hope Alissa likes them! From what I’ve seen, it looks like she’s going to end up with one very beautiful quilt!
