two baby quilts and a scrap winner!

Remember these simple quilts? I made them to use up some extra batting, and also to give me a chance to try some loopy quilting. I’ve always admired the look, and was up for trying something different. Turns out it’s harder than it looks!

For the pink strip quilt I did simple loops in each of the strips, varying the size of the loops based on the width of the strip.

On the blue strip quilt I tried out the loopy figure 8 pattern, as seen on many of the quilts in Denyse Schmidt’s book. Mine does not have quite that perfect figure 8 look, but I’m pleased with it regardless. Imperfectly perfect, let’s say…

And the trip through the washer and dryer gave them that lovely crinkled look!

Oh yes, the winner… my oh my, I was so happy to hear from so many of you! Thanks for all the comments. Sounds like we’ll be seeing some beautiful things made of Heather Ross’s new fabric.

(I was also pleased to hear that I’m not the only one waiting until the very last minute to get taxes done… at least I’m not alone! Although I beg of you — please remind me not to do this next year!!)

So, the random number generator picked our winner — #197, which is AmandaJean. I’ve actually been reading AmandaJean’s fabulous blog since I started sewing about a year ago, and I’m sure most of you read it as well. (if you don’t, you should definitely check it out!) Maybe some of these small scraps will work for one of her small projects!

And since so many people commented and seemed genuinely interested in these scraps, I’ve picked a second winner… #17, Ariel. I hadn’t visited her blog before, but I’m glad I’ve found it – looks like she’s made some great quilts using some of my favorite fabrics. I think I’ll have a few more scraps once I finish the back, so she’ll get a little package of those scraps.

Thanks everyone!

far far away… a tiny little giveaway!

I have a few little scraps left over from my Far Far Away quilt, and I thought I’d do a quick little giveaway. These pieces are small — some skinny strips, a couple selvedges (though I’m thinking about stealing one to use on the quilt back!) and some other assorted small leftover pieces (see that square with the wildflowers in the picture below? That measures 2″ x 2.5″, just to give you an idea of size.) I thought they might be useful to someone though. Or at the very least, if you haven’t purchased any of this fabric yet, you could see and feel it in person!

Leave me a comment here – you can just say hi if you want, or you could let me know if you have purchased (or are planning on purchasing) some of this fabric (and if so, what you plan on making out of it!). I have a bit more on order and may be looking for ideas!

We’ll make this a quick giveaway and I’ll pick a winner tomorrow morning.

(now off to finally finish my taxes…procrastinator? indeed!)

Comments have been closed – I’ll select a winner shortly!

Far Far Away quilt top

For some reason I was kind of obsessed with getting these blocks done this weekend. Possibly because I’m trying to keep my sewing area a bit neater lately. I figured that rather than picking up and putting away all these fabrics and then pulling them out again the next time I wanted to make a block, I’d just make all the blocks all at once (and then just clean up once!) It worked, though it was a lot of blocks to make in a short amount of time! I don’t think I’ll try it that way again…

These aren’t my typical colors and it’s a real change from the last couple bright quilts I’ve made, but I really like the end result. someone used the word ‘soothing’ in a comment on the previous post, and i think that’s a good description. I do find these colors calming and soothing, and while they’re more muted than what I’m typically drawn to, it’s a nice change.

What’s even nicer is that when I first started this quilt, I wasn’t loving it, but now that I have the top (nearly) completed, I really like the final result! That’s always fun, right? These are a couple of my favorite blocks –

I still have to add the white sashing to the sides, but then this top is done! I think I’ll try to use the remaining Far Far Away fabrics for a pieced back.
