It’s finished! A modified bento box quilt.

bento31

This one’s done! It’s still busy and it still makes me a little dizzy, but as expected, I am liking it more now that it’s completed.

For those who may not have seen the original post about this quilt, this is my take on the bento box quilt. I thought it might add a little interest to add a few more pieces to each block and to change the width of the strips a bit. A tutorial is posted here on the way I constructed these blocks.

I quilted it with a random meandering, using a light gray thread. (I use Mettler thread, and I can only say good things about it!) Initially I wasn’t sure I liked the gray on this quilt – it ended up being quite noticeable on the lighter backing, but I decided I could live with it (I just couldn’t bear the thought of ripping it all out to start again!)

The binding is a great turquoise stripe from the Lizzy House Red Letter Day line. And I’ve already shown you the back, but here it is again.

I wanted something simple, since the front is kind of busy, so these wide solid stripes seemed like a good idea. Of course I couldn’t resist adding in just a few other pieces of some of the prints from the front!

This one is on the smallish side, measuring about 40″ x 54″. I kept it small so I’d have enough of these fabrics for the second version (coming soon!)

no willpower…

I kind of told myself that I wouldn’t spend any money at the quilt show this weekend. At first, I thought all would be ok… we spent some time looking at the quilts –  this cathedral quilt is huge and all hand sewn!

cathedral

and it reminds me that I never did finish the cathedral quilt I started last year…

I also liked the different patterns on this one

Anyway, then we came across the vendors… and that’s when things turned bad –

I decided I couldn’t live without these wonderful vintage feedsack pieces

and if you’re going to buy some feedsack pieces, you really must buy enough to make an entire quilt, right?

And then there was a booth with these beautiful Japanese fabrics. I actually had purchased two of these prints many months ago online, and then never could seem to find them again…

Oh, and I just might have put a deposit on a new quilting machine… show special and all…

See, no willpower.

quilt #2 – same fabrics, different quilt

Catchy title, right? Let’s blame it on me being tired, and not being very creative. Maybe something good will come to me, or perhaps one of you will have a great name… (here’s hoping!)

Anyway, on to the quilt… I really like the colors and fabrics I used for the modified bento box quilt, and thought it would be fun to make a second quilt using the same fabrics. Once I have them both completed, I’ll have to do a side-by-side comparison…

I still get a bit dizzy looking at the first quilt, so for this one I decided to go with simple large blocks, along the lines of Denyse Schmidt’s Drunk Love in a Log Cabin (now there’s a great name!). These are actually the same type of blocks I requested for my month (this month!) for Block Party. (I can’t wait to show you that quilt when it’s finished – so far the blocks I’ve received have been fabulous!)

I’m quite pleased with the way this one turned out. It took a little longer than I expected – somehow making those large blocks (15.5″) takes more time that you’d expect! And then it took some time to get all the blocks arranged in a pleasing way… but in the end it was definitely worth it – I love love love the end result!

This weekend is the Vermont Quilt Festival. I’ve never been, but I hear it’s a good time and I’m looking forward to it. I’m thinking a little fabric shopping may be in my future!
