you know it’s time to do some organizing…

…when the fabric stack gets this tall!

Surprisingly enough, I’ve managed to do a fairly good job at keeping my fabrics organized by color in individual plastic bins. Though as you can see, periodically I have to run around the house collecting all the various fabrics which have escaped.

I sort (loosely) by color, and then back into those bins they go! I use these plastic bins from Walmart – this size perfectly fits three rows of folded fabrics (folded around my 6″ ruler). So far so good! How about you? Do you sort by color, or do you prefer to sort your fabrics some other way?

more greenfield hill blocks!

I’m still plugging away at these blocks, and I’m getting kind of excited about what the finished quilt might look like!

It’s been kind of fun to work with fabrics that are not my typical go-to colors. My challenge with these blocks have been to brighten them up a bit – even though the fabrics in the Greenfield Hill line are on the darker side, I think they can be combined in such a way (by adding in a few additional prints) to make a brighter, lighter set of blocks.

We’ll see how it turns out once I get them all finished!

We’re currently in the midst of that big snowstorm that’s hitting so many states. As much as I’d love for this to be an unexpected mid-week day off (perfect for sewing!), unfortunately working from home means no snow day for me… but I hope that those of you stuck indoors have some projects on hand to keep you busy!

Innocent Crush Rectangle Squared Quilt

So… I finally finished my first quilt of 2011!

I started this one at the end of 2010, and wrote up a tutorial on how to make these blocks. I even got Morgan to sandwich it and then somehow it got stacked in a pile of finished quilts and I forgot all about it. Then when browsing the FITF flickr group the other day I saw a couple other lovely quilt tops made using my tutorial, and I realized I needed to get this one done!

I quilted this one with straight lines, running both vertically and horizontally alongside the sashing. I went with double lines on every other row and column to give it a bit more interest.

It’s bound with a bright spring green solid, which I think really complements all the blues and purples of the Innocent Crush fabrics.

The backing is one of my favorite prints from this line, along with a bit of patchwork detail at the top and bottom. It measures about 40″ x 55″ and makes a great lap quilt or a cute crib sized quilt! It’s listed in the shop!
