A disappointing yard sale weekend.

There was supposed to be some sort of yard sale extravaganza in a town about 45 minutes south of us. We drove down there, only to discover that the items presented at this large, well-advertised event were things that really should have been on their way to the dump, not tagged for sale. We wandered through for a while, and I tried not to touch anything… dirty old sheets, broken electronics, and perhaps the first front-loading washer. A relic, really.

We had a little better luck at a yard sale on the way out of town. I picked up a few old glass canning jars with glass lids. I think it was more to prove that the morning wasn’t a total waste. I’m pleased to say though that they’ve already found a home in my craft closet – used to store the many spools of colorful threads I bought at another yard sale a couple weeks ago. A much better yard sale. For sure.

Weekend project – rick rack napkins!

Here are a few new fabrics I received this week –

I ordered these on Etsy from fabricpalooza. She had a great variety of fabrics, and is having a sale through the end of July. Most will eventually end up as napkins, though I do have my eye on one or two for another project.

I currently have napkins for sale locally at a store called Ink Ink, and they’ve actually been selling quite well. I brought these two sets there this week, and have already sold the green Pod Vine set.

I’m working on a few additional sets, which hopefully will be ready on Monday. Although if the picture below is anything to go by, I have quite a lot of work ahead of me and quite possibly not enough hours in the weekend…

reusable produce bags

Along the lines of yesterday’s post, I thought I’d show you the produce bags I made to go along with my market bags. I hate those plastic ones from the grocery store, especially since you have to put each type of fruit or vegetable in a separate bag — leading to tons of wasted plastic. I decided to make my own, which would serve the same purpose, yet be reusable.

I’ve seen them made with a few different types of fabrics, including sheer curtains. I opted to go with lightweight mesh tulle which I bought at the local fabric store. It’s virtually weightless and really inexpensive, and comes in a variety of colors (in case you want corresponding colors for your fruits and veggies!)

They are very easy to make – requiring a limited amount of sewing (straight lines only – I like that!). Perhaps the hardest part is inserting the tie at the top, though that’s even easy if you use a safety pin to pull the ribbon through the channel.

I’ve been impressed with how well they’ve held up. I use them not only for produce, but also for pasta or rice from the bulk foods section. I haven’t ripped one yet… though I have lost quite a few to friends and family who want some of their own!
