I had to buy more fabric…

…so I could finish some projects. Or at least, that’s what I’m telling myself. I did buy these dotted fabrics to use for the backing of my spotted squares quilt. I’m not yet sure how I’ll piece it together – probably a large section of the pink, and maybe another block or two to match the front. Possibly the green seeds for the binding… (you know this will all change by the time I get to doing it!)

Since I was ordering, I also got some more of the Denyse Schmidt argyle fabric. I’m really loving that one all of a sudden…

And last but not least, some of the Alexander Henry Starling in pink (those birds are so cute!) and some of this wildflower fabric because I can’t resist fabrics in shades of orange and brown. I don’t have plans for it yet, so for now it’s going right into my stash.

Tonight I have big plans with my needle and thread (does that make me sound sad?) and if I sew quickly, perhaps I’ll have a finished quilt to show you tomorrow!

Do you see what I see?

Might that be some free motion quilting?!

I ran out of excuses to put off the free motion quilting, so this weekend I just decided to go for it. I have to say that it’s at the same time both harder and easier than I expected. To tell you the truth, I didn’t really know what to expect, but for some reason I thought that moving the fabric and creating the designs would be difficult. In fact, this part seemed to go smoothly. What was difficult was controlling my movements – I’ve ended up with stitches of a variety of lengths, not to mention many crossed stitches and some sharp, pointy lines where I obviously jerked the fabric rather than moving it slowly and evenly.

I keep telling myself that I won’t notice those flaws once it’s completed and washed. I hope that’s the case!

(Does it make it more legit if I wear gloves? Maybe it makes it look like I know what I’m doing!)

The spotted quilt top is finished!

Anyone have a name for this one? I haven’t been able to come up with anything, though it seems like it needs a good name…

So the good news is that I still love this quilt, maybe even more so, now that it’s all one piece. It’s a bit bigger than the other two finished quilts. I kept adding one more row, or one more column, but soon found myself out of polka dotted fabrics, so this is as large as it’s going to get. I haven’t yet come up with fabric for the back – I think I’ll need to order something, but am not quite sure yet what I’d like.

I questioned the one dark brown square (as seen in the first photo), and even made a replacement. I don’t really want to tell you how long I spent staring at it with that square, and then with the possible replacement. I kept re-entering the room to see if I liked the look, or if I found it distracting. In the end, I decided I liked it, and kept it as it was. I think (or hope, anyway) that it’s balanced enough with a couple other darker fabrics on the other side.

I can’t wait to see this one finished!

And of course, I’m already onto another quilt. I guess that shouldn’t surprise you…
