Fabric in, fabric out… a little giveaway!

Morgan thought the title should be binging and purging, but I didn’t feel that made for a nice visual…

Anyway, lately I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed by my fabric stash. Trying to organize and clean it up seems like a very daunting task and I don’t even know where to begin. I suppose most of the problem is due to my lack of organization. For so long I’ve felt that my sorting and piling method was working for me, but now I’m thinking I was just kidding myself. I’ve decided that I finally do have to get organized, and I suppose that means buying plastic bins and sorting and folding the fabric by color. (maybe then I’ll stop buying multiples of fabric I already own!)

fabric-scraps

One of my biggest problems has to be with my scrap stash. This picture shows many piles of scraps – yes, I can’t throw anything away! I have all the best intentions to use up every last scrap, but I realize that’s just not going to happen. I’m drowning in scraps and there aren’t enough hours in the day to sew them all together!

This is where you come in. I went through my scraps and came up with a few little bundles to give away. The first bundle is made up of larger scraps – those that I don’t think I’ll ever use.

Then I went through the small scraps – some of these are quite tiny (and now very wrinkly!), but I did at one time really think that I was going to use them. They’d be great for a spiderweb quilt, which is what I had in mind, but then never got around to. Or they could be used for any other small projects. Did I mention that they’re tiny? They are.  I made up three bags of these small scraps.

To enter to win one of these four bundles, just leave a comment here. Maybe you can give me some ideas as to what you’d do with small scraps – I’m always up for new project ideas! I’ll pick 4 winners on Monday night.

Thanks for helping me do some spring cleaning! Maybe I’ll be able to show you a photo of a completely organized stash by then!

Edit: Comments are now closed. I’ll pick winners shortly!

“Sea”gull baby boy quilt

(Ok, I’m running out of creative names, forgive me!)

seagull-front

I think this might be the first boy quilt I’ve made, and I love it! This one matches the Fuchsia Seas quilt, but uses blues, oranges and browns. Again, it’s mainly Heather Ross prints, from both the Mendocino and Lightning Bugs lines (I even convinced myself to cut into some of my goldfish fabric!). I do love how the lines can be mixed and matched.

seagull-back

For the back, I happened to find some yardage of this seagull print, which is from the Heather Ross Lightning Bugs line. There’s a section of pieced strips from what I had cut off the blocks on the front, and a fun polka dot binding. As with the girl version, this one is free motion quilted and is soft and crinkly… just perfect!

A few of you asked about measurements for this quilt, so here you go!

This baby quilt used 30 blocks, 15 solid white blocks and 15 patterned blocks. Each block is 7.5″ x 10.5″. For this quilt, I used 6 blocks for each row, with a total of 5 rows. The small center white rectangle in the center of each patterned block measures 2.5″ wide. The length varies, since I was going for a random look, but in the past I’ve done them all 2.5″ x 4″. The resulting quilt, after washing, measures 39″ x 46.5″.

The white fabric is a cotton sateen that I buy at Joann’s. I use it for almost all my quilts.

Like the other, this one may be for sale, or I might decide to just keep it on hand should I need a baby gift in the future! (Sarah? Kim?)

Block Party blocks for Kristen

Just under the wire! Kristen gave us a little equation for this month’s blocks, which you can see here (part of it involved circles, eek!). I admit it had me stumped for quite some time. I’ve never pieced curves, so I was certainly apprehensive. So apprehensive that I avoided it in the first block.

I tried to get a curved look without actually making curves. This block is large – about 17″ square.

For the second block, I did give the curved piecing a try, with less than perfect results, as you’ll see below. I would have redone it to get a better circle, but I was afraid of running out of fabric, so I stuck with the original one. I’m hoping it’ll just add to the wonkiness (hopefully!).

This one is about 15″ square. I hope you like them Kristen!
