Heather Ross on Martha Stewart

Perhaps you already read this over on Heather’s blog, but if not, be sure to watch (or tape!) the Martha Stewart show on Monday, February 28th (10 am on the Hallmark channel). It’s a live baby shower show, and Heather will be there showing how to make these adorable baby bloomers from Weekend Sewing.

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how excited I was to have a chance to make up a few samples for Heather. I love this pattern – the bloomers are quick to make, and turn out perfectly every time. And how cute is that new print? Little girls and their horses… oh my!

These bloomers are definitely a great gift idea, and of course I can’t wait to see what other ideas will be shown on the show. We still have about a month before the baby should make his appearance, so I might have time for a couple additional projects!

Edited to add: Here’s a link for a clip of Heather’s bloomers segment. I made all the bloomers that were hanging on the line in the background – how fun to see them on TV!

pretty new fabrics – Ink & Spindle

Ok, not new, but new to me! I’m thrilled to have added some of these gorgeous Ink & Spindle fabrics to my stash. I’ve drooled over these fabrics for a very long time, but each time I go to order, I’m put off by the cost to ship them from Australia (I know shipping costs are necessary, but I still hate them! It’s also why the baby’s room is without a bookcase – shipping for the one I want from CB2.com is 50% of the cost of the bookcase!)

But enough of my shipping issues, back to the fabric! I love the fact that these fabrics are all hand printed, and love that they’re printed on a variety of organic cotton and hemp blend basecloths. It does make them a bit on the pricier side, but certainly worth it if you want to splurge a bit. I like having a little bit on hand to mix in with my other fabrics.

I was quite excited when my friend Phiona, owner of my favorite local fabric shop, Nido, mentioned that she was considering ordering Ink & Spindle fabrics for the shop. They arrived recently, and I had to go snag myself a few bundles. They’re lovely to look at, and wonderful to sew with. I’ve already cut up several of these to make up a quilt for Phiona for a shop sample.

So if you’ve been considering ordering some of these fabrics, you can now order online from Nido – fabrics are sold as fat quarter bundles, listed in the ‘Other Items’ section. This bundle is one of my favorites. (And of course, if you’re like me and hate shipping costs, shipping is only $5 for orders of $50 or less, or free for orders over $50.  (And now I’ll stop complaining about the price of shipping!))

I think I’ll go admire these fabrics instead. Have a happy Thursday!

handmades in shades of blue…

A little while back Kate posted an absolutely gorgeous baby cardigan. Lately I’ve been obsessed with cute little items that are knit and/or crocheted for babies – there’s something so sweet about babies in handmade sweaters. I know how to knit, though my skills are lacking, but for some reason I’ve never learned how to crochet. But now Kate, and all her gorgeous crocheted things, has me wanting to learn. Lessons from YouTube, perhaps…

Anyway, not too long after leaving a comment on Kate’s post, she generously offered to make up one of these wonderful little cardigans for the new baby. It arrived recently, and I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this one – it’s made of the most gorgeously soft yarn in this perfect blue color with fabulous little buttons. I just can’t wait to see the new baby in this sweater!! Thank you so much Kate! This one will be treasured forever.

In return, I made up a few household goods for Kate. I spent some time browsing her flickr photostream and favorites and noticed lots of projects in shades of blues, which I’m hoping means it’s a favorite color. I pulled out a few of my favorites and chopped them up into tiny squares. I noticed Kate had favorited several plus quilts, so I went with a tiny plus design on a couple potholders.

I used the remaining printed squares to make up a few coordinating napkins. These are loosely based on the napkin tutorial I wrote up for Sew Mama Sew a while back. I hope these will make a nice addition to Kate’s home!
