far far away squared

I didn’t have enough willpower to resist ordering a fat quarter of each of the prints from Heather Ross’ Far Far Away line. They arrived the other day and they looked so great all together that I decided to make one of my favorite simple charm square quilts. Sometimes I just can’t resist a quilt made up of squares of all the fabric from one line (like here, with the Katie Jump Rope prints, or here with the MoMo Wonderland prints).

Boy was it hard to cut into these though! I looked at them for a long time, touched and rearranged them for a while and then took the plunge… I opted for 6″ squares, and I think I ended up doing 6 of each print to make the quilt large enough (it has to be large enough to cover me, as I’m definitely not giving this one up!)

I considered adding a solid border to make it a bit bigger, but I think I’m going to just leave it as it is. It will probably get a solid color for the backing – I’m leaning towards a corresponding purple, but I’ll have to wait for my order from Pink Chalk Fabrics to arrive to see what matches best (free shipping on orders over $50 this weekend – yay! …you know me and a deal!)

I think I’m really going to love it!ร‚ย  (ok, I already do!)

Looks great! I like the charm square quilt top for favorite fabrics too. You could stare at it for hours, noticing different things. I am tempted to get some of this collection while it’s still out there. Nice quilt!

Thanks for this post, I was feeling a little guilty (just got e-mail outlining my splurge) of my second time around order on this line . . . I just had to have it. It is way to hard to show self-control with all the memorial weekend bargains and also it is Heather Ross fabric . . . Thanks for helping me justify my lack of willpower – your quilt as always is inspiring!

Very nice! I have yet to get any of this collection, very cheery!

Okay, I just ordered the fat quarter pack of this. Ashley, you are great for my inspiration, hard on my pocketbook. I already had some princess and the pea, but I knew I wouldn’t be satisfied until I had the whole line…

It looks great! I have some at home too but now I am in Tokyo and guess what – I saw Far far away in a store – totally in stock and cheaper! I will have to bring some back.

I wanted to ask if you pre washed your fabric? Can you tell how much it will shrink? If you pre-washed, after the wash, are the ends terribly frayed? I hate that which makes me not want to pre-wash.

I am not a devotee, thanks to your lovely blog! I’ve just received my mermaids in the mail yesterday and still have them out for viewing (read as staring at their beauty!).

Yum! I’m glad you posted again about Far Far Away, because I meant to ask you when I saw your last quilt with it รขโ‚ฌโ€ what are your thoughts about mixing the double gauze with regular quilting-weight cotton? Any pros and cons to share? Thanks!

Your quilt is beautiful! I’m inspired and wondering if you can point me in the direction of a good online tutorial or other resource for a “simple charm quilt??”
