This pile. Feeling oh so very wintery and appropriate for January. I’m not sure yet what it will become, but I think I’ll spend some time this afternoon trying to figure it out!
one last finish for 2014
It’s not often that I post a quilt top and then post the finished quilt in the next post, but I was motivated to get this one done. It’s been pretty cold here, and all I could think about was draping myself with a corduroy quilt.
I quickly made up a simple backing out of Essex yarn dyed in black along with a bit of extra corduroy and a few other scrap pieces.
(not your typical quilting fabrics – corduroy, double gauze, linen and cotton scraps from old (and new!) dish towels, fabric from old clothing, and even the backside of the corduroy)
I opted for a really light weight batting, because even though I wanted this one to be extra warm, I still wanted to be able to reach for it even when it wasn’t freezing out, and I wasn’t looking for something too bulky. As you can see, I decided on simple horizontal lines for quilting – nothing fancy, because again, I just wanted to be laying under it! I used a gray Aurifil in 40 weight, which worked out well. Even though I don’t usually love the look of light thread on a dark fabric, the stitches do kind of sink into the corduroy and the gray is a little less bright than white would have been.
You can see the great texture the corduroy provides here. And that black and white binding? Love it.
I’m happy to have this one as a last finish of 2014!

mixed leftovers
I stumbled upon this image on pinterest the other day and immediately was wanting a quilt in the same colors. It seemed so wintery and comfy, and perfect for this time of year. I went searching for fabrics in similar colors, but couldn’t really find the right shades of brown (this was my first pull, which I still quite like! maybe that will be the next quilt?), so from there I decided to veer towards a more greenish yellow with gray rather than the brown (#2).
Wouldn’t you know – I found I didn’t really have these colors in my quilting cotton stash either, but I did find the colors I was looking for in unlikely places — a large piece of baby wale gray corduroy that was earmarked long ago for a dress, some gray patterned double gauze remnants from a dress I made Hazel, a yellowy green JCrew button down I no longer wore, a few pieces of an old Orla Kiely dishtowel used long ago for a beach bag, yarn dyed gingham scraps from a Tova made ages ago, a new linen dishtowel I had liked too much to use, and a few other linen pieces along with some other coordinating prints.
I chopped them all up into pieces of various widths measuring 6″ tall and arranged them on the design wall. The gray corduroy became the background, and then I couldn’t resist adding in various strips and random pieces here and there. It doesn’t match my original vision at all, but I’m happy with how it turned out and I can’t wait to see how this one feels with all the corduroy. I expect it will be quite warm and I think I’ll love the mix of textures!
