I need this fabric… (Denyse Schmidt Flea Market Fancy)

Ok, maybe I don’t need it. I just really, really want it.

Perhaps I’m the only one, but when I find a fabric I love, I can’t seem to stop thinking about it until I get my hands on some. My fabric of choice for this moment: a print from an older Denyse Schmidt line, Flea Market Fancy. I have two tiny scraps of this print in green, but since the line is out of print, I can’t seem to find any (in any color!) in any size bigger than the scraps I already have.

Of course, I don’t have any specific plans for this fabric. I just want to have it.

I’ve already spent more than enough time searching the internet with no luck. On the rare occasions when I have found it for sale, it’s been snatched by a luckier bidder…

So here is my plea — If anyone has some they want to part with, or finds any online (being a better internet searcher than I am), please let me know. I would try my best to find some way to reward you for your efforts!

Edit: Just one day after posting this, I managed to find 3 yards of the yellow fabric on Ebay… (yeah!) The search continues for the other colors though…

A tale of two bags… twin market bags in Amy Butler fabrics

I love these twin bags! (They’re not identical, so I guess we’ll have to call them fraternal twin bags.) I’ve made these market bags in the past, using Martha Stewart dishtowels. That set gets used daily and I really think the design we came up with is great. The size is super for groceries, and they’ve really held up well.

I decided to make some new ones out of this lovely gray and mustard colored Amy Butler fabric. If you’ll recall, I made a skirt using this same fabric combo, so I guess I’ll have to remember not to use this bag while wearing that skirt!

Both bags are reversible and both have some light interfacing on the bottom panels for some additional support and stability. If you didn’t want to use them for groceries, they’d also be great as book bags, beach bags, or just simple totes… so versatile!

I think they should remain as a set, but my sister seems to already have her eye on the dark gray version… we’ll see…

Food, fireworks… and of course, fabric!

Yesterday was National Night Out, which I’ve since learned is a national event celebrated now for 25 years (15 in our town, apparently). It focuses on crime prevention awareness and is a way to strengthen communities. As part of this event, there was a parade and later on, fireworks. We saw it as a good day for a little bbq at our place, and invited my brother and sister over for some dinner and fireworks.

I made a couscous salad I had been craving. I first heard of this salad from my cousin-in-law, Kim. She found the recipe on Smitten Kitchen, which has since become my favorite food blog. If you haven’t seen it yet, you absolutely should take a look. Great recipes and wonderful food photography! I’ve made this salad a few times, and it’s always really tasty. It’s made with Israeli couscous, with a dressing of roasted grape tomatoes and garlic. You can find the recipe here.

Of course, I decided to serve it to my brother, who doesn’t eat tomatoes, olives, couscous, or any of the other ingredients, and my sister, who doesn’t eat olives, or anything that’s touched olives, claiming that the olives leak their juices all over and ruin the taste even after they’ve been picked out – consequently I have lots of leftovers. Luckily it tastes just as good the next day…

Following dinner, we had a little glimpse from the back deck of some of the fireworks

And now, back to the crafts… again, I’m abandoning unfinished projects for the minute and turning my attention to a new project, or a new quilt, actually. I am still working on the cathedral window quilt, but it’s slow going and I think I need a project that I’ll be able to finish within my lifetime!

I’ve looked at quite a few quilts on Flickr and I’ve decided on a coin quilt – or a modified version thereof. It seems quick and easy, and since I’ve opted to go with larger rectangles, I’m hoping that will cut down on the sewing time. I have about 45 of the colored rectangles cut out now, so only about 30 or so to go.
