Avoiding taxes = a new quilt top

So, taxes. Ugh. I hate doing them, and each year I say that I’m going to pay someone to do them for me so I don’t have to think about them. Once again, I waited too long, and now I’m forced to do them myself. I gathered all my paperwork, sat down with my laptop, realized that I was going to owe money and decided to work on something more fun… like this new quilt top.

I don’t know if everyone will like this one as much as I do, since it is quite bright, but that’s ok. I was thinking that it might make a nice picnic quilt (if you spilled on it, you’d probably never see it!). I actually included a photo of it in my entry to the Heather Ross Design Challenge (I hear that Denyse Schmidt is one of the judges – maybe that will earn me some points?! I hope so, since my drawing skills leave much to be desired!)

Anyway, as with the last string quilt I made, it’s paper pieced, and now that I’ve gotten all the blocks done, I have the task of removing all the paper from the back. I decided to make larger blocks this time, using an 11″ square piece of paper. I didn’t have any paper that large, so I had to run over to Staples for some 11 x 17″ paper. Of course, they only sell it by the ream, so I guess that means that I have enough paper to make 15 more quilts like this one. Awesome.

It’s made out of all of my favorite fabrics, including many Flea Market Fancy prints. I finally broke down and cut into them, and it actually felt good! It also used up some scraps, and I like the fact that there are many fabrics that are repeated throughout the quilt, but also that there are some that only have one strip. I think it adds a little interest.

Typically I use a lot of white, so I decided not to in this one. I used just one small strip of white in the center of each block, creating just a bit of a break from all the color. I might bind it in white as well, though I’m still debating.

I’ll be back in about 2 weeks with a picture of it sewn together, once I manage to get all the paper peeled off the back! (ah, hopefully it won’t take that long – I already have plans for another quilt with the remaining strips!)

We have a few winners… (and I’m a bit more organized!)

Thanks for all the great comments and project ideas! I wish I could give scraps to each and every one of you (although then I’d have to spend all my time at the post office and I really dislike going there!)… Anyway, Random.org selected our four winners this morning, and here they are…

Winner of the larger scraps is #112 Sarah

Winners of the scraps bags are #186 Sandi, #21, Marissa, and #40, Michaela

If you were a winner, please email me your address so I can get your scraps out to you!

Oh, and based on the comments left, it seems as though there are a number of people who use scraps that are even too small to hold a seam. I typically throw away pieces of that size, but if anyone wants them, just leave me a comment. I’ll keep a list and as I have them available I’ll send them to someone on the list. I’d certainly love to know they’re getting used rather than thrown away!

So, the big question, did this help me get organized? Indeed it did!

I bought several of these plastic totes and pulled out and refolded all my fabric. I folded them to a size of 5.5″ x 6″, which allowed me to fit three rows in each bin. It’s sorted by color, though obviously not by the various shade of each color (hey, I was just happy to get all the fabrics of each color together! baby steps…)

I really resisted sorting by color, and now I’m not sure why. How could you resist this? I’ve already found it so much easier to find what I’m looking for. These fabrics are less than 2 yard cuts. I’m still working on organizing the larger cuts. And the scraps. They’re still not organized.

These plastic bins fit nicely under my craft table. You may recall when I got this table, er… door. My brother attached it to the wall and secured it from the ceiling with steel wires. It’s set at the perfect height so I can stand next to it to cut fabric, and I just love it (even though now most of my fabric cutting occurs at the dining room table!)

Folding fabric, quilting ADD, and a swap, maybe?

First of all, thanks for all the wonderful comments! There are definitely some crafty people out there, and many, many scrap lovers! I’m inspired by all your comments to start loving my scraps, rather than feeling overwhelmed by them. My next quilt will use scraps (once I get them all organized!)

Speaking of organizing, do you think it’s possible to get a blister from folding fabric? I’d laugh too, but I’m the one with the blister… I was using my plastic ruler to fold the fabrics to the same size, and apparently kept hitting the same spot on my hand. Ouch! Hopefully I can stay organized so I won’t have to spend another weekend folding fabric!

Secondly, do you think there’s such a thing as quilting A.D.D? If so, I have it. I just could not get focused on anything this weekend. In an attempt to avoid doing taxes, I thought I should start a quilt, but instead seemed to have started more than one. Should I start a coin quilt? Should I do a little paper piecing? Maybe work on something that’s already started?

I have nothing to show for it save for this pile of cut fabrics…

And back to fabric… folding all of that fabric reminded me that there are still a few fabrics I’m dying to own… so I was wondering if anyone might be up for a swap? I’m looking for the Heather Ross mushrooms, either white or yellow, or the gnomes in yellow. I’m also looking for two of the Flea Market Fancy prints – the small posies in blue (as shown below but in blue), and also the larger floral bouquet in blue.

I have other FMF prints I would trade, or Heather Ross VW buses in either pink or blue, or I have a couple of fat quarters of the Heather Ross seagull print. Let me know if you might be interested in swapping!

Winners of the scrap giveaway will be picked tonight and announced tomorrow morning…
