Friday ramblings…

Well hello! I know I promised something quilty by the end of the week, but to be honest, I haven’t gotten too far on any of my quilting projects. I drew quilting lines on one, and I have another that needs basting. Morgan has taken over the job for me (I’m staying away from the spray adhesive these days). I’m hoping to make that a permanent change – I think he’s better at it than I am (and to be honest, I love not having to do that step!)

I also pulled out (once again!) these old munki munki blocks. You might recall that I had grand plans to turn this into a queen sized quilt, but I think I’m going to just accept that that’s not going to happen! Instead I’m going to sew what I have into a smaller quilt – I think it will end up being about 40″ square. Better than nothing, right?

Last night I sewed up a stack of these smaller washcloths, using what I had left of the Michael Miller organic terry cloth. I love this tiny size (about 6″ square), and of course, I love using up smaller scraps! I don’t know exactly what they’ll be for, but I’m sure I’ll find a use!

For those who were wondering, I did find more of this great terry cloth at Purl Soho (though it seems to be sold out again), and also at Alewives (they’re also currently having an online 20% off storewide sale, in case you’re interested! Prices will be adjusted after you place your order.)

Other things I’ve noticed online this week:

  • Melanie, of Above All Fabric, has been posting great lists of gift giving ideas. I definitely need ideas, and I’m adding a few of these to my list.
  • Do you need a gift for a crafty friend? The 2011 Whip Up calendar is now available! I’m really happy to have one of my photos included – thanks Kathreen!
  • While browsing for fabric, I noticed that Aunt Bea’s Fabric has some interesting new japanese prints. I love these color basics by Lecien. I have a discount coupon for you too — Bea is offering you 10% off your first order with discount code FITF.
  • I’m still working on destashing some fabric. Unfortunately it’s slow going! If you’re interested though, keep an eye on the shop. (I’ve also been trying to update Facebook when I have new listings).

And lastly, please help me welcome a new sponsor, the Fabric Quarter Quilt Shop! Wendy has lots and lots of wonderful fabrics, and offers free shipping on orders over $100. She also has a lot of precut bundles and kits, including this new Funky Peppermint Table Runner by Penny of Sewtakeahike (and if you order this kit before 11/21 and use the code funky15, you’ll save 15%!).

Enjoy the weekend, and be sure to check back next week, as I’ll have a fun fabric giveaway for you from a new online shop!

one more blanket, ok?

I know, I know, it’s all babies and blankets over here lately. Hopefully you’ll indulge me for just one more post, then I promise to finish up a quilt, or something less baby-related!

Anyway, after writing the other day about how I really wanted one of those voile/flannel blankets in my size, it was all I could think about for the remainder of the day. I didn’t actually make one yet (still planning on it though!), but I did make up a baby version of what I was thinking of.

In order to make it adult size, I’ll have to go for a patchwork look for the front, and a pieced flannel backing. I figure a good way to see if I like that idea is to make a baby version… and yes indeed, I like it. I certainly do!

It’s so bright and cheerful! I used 6 1/2″ squares of some of my favorite voiles and sewed them into a large square, measuring about 36″. It’s paired with a bright white Robert Kaufman flannel and the binding is the dark brown voile (cut on the bias in 2.25″ strips).

And now it’s a toss up as to which is my new favorite!

(p.s. I had several questions about the size of this blanket – size is really up to you! Since the voile is extra wide, you could go as big as about 40″ square (or the width of your flannel after washing), though you’d need a little over a yard of each of the voile and flannel. I typically buy fabrics in yard cuts, so I made my blankets about 34″ – 36″ square. And of course they don’t have to be square – you could make a rectangular sized blanket with a width of about 40″ and any length you’d like.)

pretty voile blankets

One thing I’ve really been enjoying making is baby blankets. My absolute favorites are these made from fabulous Anna Maria Horner voiles and flannels. Truly a perfect match!

I’ve actually wanted to try these out ever since Anna Maria posted about them here, but at that time, I had no reason to make tiny little blankets. So of course, as soon as I found out I was pregnant, I returned to her post to drool over these blankets.

I made the first three a couple months ago, before we knew it would be a boy, and as it turns out, there are a couple which may just be the wrong colors for what we need (oops!). I decided to remedy that this weekend, stopping over at Nido for a couple extra yards of voile in blues and greens.

My favorite so far might be this blue one, using one of the new voile prints paired with this great solid blue flannel. [The flannel is by Robert Kaufman (purchased at Purl Soho) and is quite possibly the nicest solid flannel I’ve felt in quite some time (and it comes in lots of great colors!)]

I really can’t say enough about this voile/flannel combo – it’s soft on one side, silky on the other, and has a really great weight. I can’t help but think I need to piece together some voile and flannels to make one in my size!
