Trailmarker quilt

I wanted to show you this quilt today, but then totally forgot to write the post last night (I blame the early, early wakings (thanks to Max) for my forgetfulness!). So this post will probably be short. Maybe more photos and fewer words…

This quilt contains lots of my favorite fabrics, going for a softer, more neutral look. It’s paired with nearly every neutral I had in my stash – mixing up lots of Kona, Essex and Free Spirit solids.

I bound it with an aqua polka dot print I’ve had in my stash forever.

It’s quilted with straight lines of random widths. It does take quite a bit of time to quilt, but I think it’s well worth it.

And here’s the back! I’m really quite taken with it — it’s just a mix of all the leftover neutral solids along with just a few bits of color.

perfectly perched in plum

Did you know Laurie Wisbrun has yet another fabulous line coming out soon? You might remember some of these prints from a little while back – Laurie was offering them through her Etsy shop, and I bought a FQ stack to make a gray and yellow quilt for Max’s room (I hate to admit that they never quite made it into a quilt, though I do admire them in a lovely little stack on my fabric shelves!) I did make up a fun pillow for the rocker in his room though, and I was so pleased to hear that Robert Kaufman decided to pick up this line. It’s called Perfectly Perched and it will be available in July in these three great colorways.

Can you pick a favorite? I still can’t, but decided to go with the raspberry and lime prints for my first quilt out of this line. I added in a few additional prints – that great circle print from Laurie’s Modern Whimsy line (and as an aside, many of Laurie’s circles go quite well with this new line… I’m just saying!), a bit of flea market fancy, a little floral from Children at Play, and the Running Stitch print from Patty Young’s latest line.

The quilt design came about from me playing around with a little paper piecing and some leftover paper squares from the last string quilt I made. I didn’t use a pattern, but you can find a similar design in Gwen Marston’s Liberated Quiltmaking II. (Rita also made a beautiful (and much more precise!) version here, and references a different pattern.)

You could be more precise and have everything all line up neatly, but I decided to cut my pieces freehand and let them be wonky. I like the look and I think it pairs well with the mismatched patchwork plum background. I’m particularly fond of this patchy background, and was happy to find these plum solids in my stash. I’m not certain of all the colors, though I know there’s some Kona Cerise along with a couple solids from Michael Miller’s new Cotton Couture line (still need to get that color card!)

And now, the dilemma… backing? I can’t decide. Plum, lime green, some other color? Rather than think about it, I’ve set it aside for a while, but I’d really like to get it quilted, so if you have a suggestion, I’m all ears!

breakout

I didn’t wait too long before cutting into Lucie Summers’ fabulous line, Summersville, for Moda. I had no real plan, only that I wanted to incorporate all the prints she had sent, paired with some corresponding solids. As I was playing around, I started making these bars – one side with a fun Summersville print, the other with a corresponding solid and a contrasting skinny solid strip to separate the two.

I added in a couple prints from Lotta Jansdotters Echo line, because I think they happen to play quite nicely together, and used Kona Snow for the background. The layout is kind of random – I feel like I had more of a plan when I started, but then it kind of turned into this, and I kind of like the randomness of it all.

But of course, what I love most about this one are all of Lucie’s gorgeous prints! I keep looking at them and trying to pick a favorite and I still can’t settle on one. I think the alphabetty print is right up there though, and have you seen Lucie’s embroidery project? If I had the patience (and skills!) I’d embroider the alphabet print. For sure.

Anyway, I’ve noticed Summersville starting to pop up online, so if you’ve been waiting to get these prints, now might be the time!
