I have a little giveaway for you today, courtesy of a new online shop! I know you’ve all heard me mention my favorite local fabric & yarn shop in Burlington, Nido. And now you can experience a little of Nido yourselves, since the owner, Phiona, has just set up an online shop. You won’t get to hang out and chat like I do, but you will have a chance to shop for some great fabrics!
Nido carries a great selection, including many of your favorite designers – Heather Ross, Denyse Schmidt, Anna Maria Horner, Etsuko Furuya, Nani Iro (to name just a few!) as well as lots of corresponding Kona solids. (They also carry lots of yarn, but since I don’t know much about yarn, I can’t tell you much about that portion of the store!) Shipping is just $5 for all orders under $50, and free for any orders over $50.
To celebrate the launch of the new shop, Phiona is offering up a great fat quarter bundle of Heather Ross’s Far Far Away II fabrics in the Meadow colorway. I like that the selection is small, but all really great stuff. Sometimes online fabric shops can just be overwhelming with their selections. I wish I lived closer so I could visit!
I was lucky enough to visit Nido on a recent trip to Burlington. It is an amazing shop…and the owner, Phiona, is such a sweetheart. I think she has done an amazing job translating the stores extensive offerings online. I will definitely be buying my fabric here in the future!

Free fat quarters?! You know where I will be shopping Friday
One thing I wish were easier to come across in online shops is custom fat quarter bundles. For those who don’t have wonderful local stores, it’s really helpful to see a fat quarter or half yard bundle of various fabric lines that the shop owner has put together.

The website is really beautifully designed, and I like the edited selection. One thing I really love when buying fabric online is an option to sort the available fabrics by color. Often when I am working on a project I am looking for something in a specific colorway and it’s very convenient to be able to browse that way.
I also love being able to browse by “type” of pattern (ie, “nearly-solids, solids, florals, dots, etc), though that’s not as important.
I would also love a “view xx per page” of “view all” option for looking at the fabric swatches so I don’t have to keep scrolling.
Just a couple suggestions!

I think the shop looks great and has a good selection! I would add the option on there for the customer to decide how many thumbnails they want to see at one time (since right now you can only scroll through them, even after selecting view all).

YAY! I’ve been reading your blog for awhile and have always been jealous of your favorite local shop offerings. I wish mine had the selection that Nido does but now I can shop there online! I checked out the shop and the only recommendations I have are for more items to show on each page–21 is not enough–and to have a feature which allows me to see a much larger swatch (so many micro prints and I need a closer look!). However, I love that when you click on a pic, the entire line shows up; that is fabulous and lets my eyes do the coordinating!

LOVE those shipping prices! $5 is reasonable but it’s enough incentive to bump the order up to $50.
One critique of the website: If it threw you more directly into the products I think that would be better. It took me a minute to figure out that I needed to click the “fabric” or “yarn” icon, then I clicked “fabric” and still didn’t see any merchandise. If you want people to do any impulse buying you need to show them products that they didn’t know they needed until they saw it!
Oh, and I’d like to see a fabric bundles section. I love browsing fabric bundles!

I got the chance to visit the real shop over the summer. I loved it. Great selection (of fabric AND patterns) but still very spacious. Phiona and I had a nice chat, and I picked up a pretty fat quarter pack of Hope Valley. I even kept the pretty orange bag for months afterwards.
MyIt is hard to pick any one thing I like that is handmade. I love to give and recieve anything that I or the giver has made with their hands. The online store is great. I love the drop down menus. Thank you for the give away.

The fabrics are gorgeous, but I’d like better quality photos of them with rulers so I can tell scale. Also, I wish all online fabric shops would tell me what the fabrics feel like (the “hand” of the fabric?). The reason I buy online is that I don’t have access to these things where I live, so I rely on the shop to tell me all about the fabric. If I have to go searching elsewhere to figure that out, I might as well buy it from whoever told me about it.

I like the over all layout and the sections. I like how many fabrics I can see on one page. I did not like that the drop down menus did not reset on their own. I clicked on “rowan” and had “amy butler” selected from designers (from the previous search) and so it showed me no items available. It took me a few seconds to figure out what I had done after I selected several other companies and had no fabrics show up.

The fabric selection is lovely. I would have liked to have been able to see more photos of some of the fabrics, especially the Nan Iro where you can’t get much of an impression from one small picture……doesn’t really do it justice.
Wow, Nido sounds great, I am just starting an obsession- I mean interest- in yarn as well. As for my favorite handmade gift, I love anything my BFF Sam makes me, she is so clever and always finds just the right thing. I, of course, love to give quilts, but bags are a close second…just made a bunch of cute personalized ballerina bags using a sweet Japanese ballerina print for my daughters, nieces and goddaughter for Christmas to tote their ballet slippers to dance class!

What a great selection of fabrics! My piece of feedback would be: this site is perfect for the person who knows their fabric or knows what they’re looking for. However, for the more novice sewist who isn’t looking for (or isn’t familiar with) a particular designer or fabric collection, it might be more difficult to see all their options. Is there a way to just display ALL the fabrics? I selected “view all” and saw one piece of a collection – and then once clicked on that one piece, I could see the rest of a collection. Perhaps I need to play around more with the site (and I probably will, resulting in a purchase or two, or twelve…).

The new site looks really nice. I like the design and the way it’s laid out. One thing I did notice was the larger pictures of the fabric swatches are blury. Got to have crisp pictures to sell fabrics online. And…I would love to see a drop down menue that sorts fabric by type – cotton, flannel, voile, home dec weight, etc.

I’m so jealous of people who actually have great fabric stores where they live. Washington, DC, has nothing! So thank you Nido for opening up a great online shop for car-less Washingtonians like me. I love the look of the website. My only recommendation would be to put the price per yard by the thumbnail images, as that is something I’d like to know up front.

I like the website…. and I love the prints… I love the simplicity of the design but since I don’t know a lot of the fabric designers or anything since I am just starting out I wanted to see “All” of them but it only shows like 21 at a time out of 215 which makes for quick browsing harder…. it would also be neat if she put in a feature where they were categorized by color too. But all over I think it is a great site. I do have a question though reguarding your site and Nido…. you all say no international shipping only state side shipping but I am in the Army and stationed over in Italy right now and I have an APO address…. do you ship to these? In case you are not sure of them they cost nothing more to ship to it is the same as if you were shipping to the states the only dofference is you can only ship using the USPS and you have to fill out a piece of paper stating what you are shipping… AKA a customs form. I really would love to order from both of you but can’t until I know if you do this.

We went on vacation to Burlington this past Spring, and I wish I had known about Nido – I would have visited the store for sure! As for the website, I really love how you you can bring up a certain designer and then choose a specific collection of theirs in the drop down box. I like the clean simple design of the whole site!
i’ve been stuck inside because of an ice storm the last two days…i’d LOVE to have some pretty fabric to make something! it even looks like we won’t get to go home for thanksgiving the roads are so bad. a whole week inside…means a whole lot of projects! happy holidays!

Great online shop. Nice clean design. Love being able to see a whole collection on one page. I will second what other folks have requested in terms of being able to search by color. It is also helpful to get some perspective on the size of the print design, either by showing a ruler or describing the size (“large flowers are 1 inch wide”). I really like the look of Nido’s shop “front” – clean-lined, whimsical, elegant. What about adding a “what’s new” section so regular buyers can have a more efficient way of seeing what’s available? I also agree with previous suggestions that being able to view more thumbnails per page would be really helpful.

my favorite type of gift to receive is one that is handmade and shows off talents that I don’t possess. I just checked out the online shop. It’s nicely done. Easy to navigate and they’ve got the obvious popular designers. My suggestion would be to carry a small variety of some of the lesser known designers as well. It’s fun to find new fabric loves.
I love to make baby quilts for family and close friends. As for handmades to receive,I love anything! It is just so wonderful to receive a gift someone took their time to make just for you!
MMmmm. A new fabric source on-line. I wish I made it up to Vermont more often so I could stop in. I like the design of the site very much – simple but not boring. I also like that yarn is also on the site (as a sewist who also loves to knit). I’m guessing the range will increase with time. Best of luck on the new enterprise.

Love the new shop and how wonderful that she’s not only got beautiful fabrics but yarns as well. She should do very well with the offering of both those since many crafters do sew and knit or crochet. I would like to see other items offered as well like notions. Thank you for the giveaway chance.

I haven’t had a chance to check out the Nido website yet but can’t wait…my favorite handmade gifts for Christmas are definitely ornaments. Year round gifts though would be beaded suncatchers/prisms. Happy holidays and thanks for doing this giveaway!

I’ve tried to check out the shop, but I think the server is a bit overwhelmed as I can’t get the page to load (this is likely a good thing). I have googled the shop in the past because I’m always looking for a nice road trip from Boston with a sweet reward at the end! The only suggestion I can make is that they list other good independent shops in the area to visit while in Burlington–including restaurants and cafes.
I’ve just started sewing, so I haven’t any fabric-related gifts to give, but I knit socks, mittens and gloves. I also make cardamom bread and vanilla for little gifts.
So far in my life the only homemade gift I’ve given has been an actual quilt, but this year for Christmas I’m making some scrappy little throw pillows. The Nido site looks great, I would only add a way to look at any bundles they sell separately:) Thanks for the chance at the giveaway!

One suggestion for the shop: I thought that the fabric and yarn text in the logo image were actually navigation and then was kind of confused when I clicked on fabric and it just took me to the home page. Might be kind of nice if those actually linked to the section they describe. Overall a very lovely shop though.
Suggestions for the shop (since you asked): I would like a “view all” button when looking at all of the fabrics. Creating custom fabric bundles might be nice, too. I would love to see some “Monaluna Circa 50″ fabric, if you can order it.

Site looks great! I would recommend having a search by color, which I sometimes find useful. I find that having multiple ways to search for fabric is helpful, as you’ll have a variety of very different shoppers using the site.
Cute shop – hope to stop by the B&M some day! I’m more of a visual person, so I prefer to see pictures load on the home page rather than selecting a drag down menu, but that’s just me. I like that there is a relatively small selection though, because each choice seems really well thought out and top quality. It will definitely be on my “Black Friday” list!! Thanks for the giveaway!

My favorite handmade gift to make – Pencil roll cases. I make them for nieces, nephews, neighbor kids, my daughter’s friends, my girlfriends and the mommas of all mentioned above. I think I have 9 in the works for this Christmas.
