it’s time for a picnic!

This quilt is kind of different than most of the other quilts I’ve completed – mainly because there’s no white in this one (no solid white, anyway…). I selected this group of fabrics and while they’re not my typical go-to colors, I really love the combo!

Much of it is made up of the great fabrics from Anna Maria Horner’s Good Folks line (love!) and rather than use solid white, I included a few prints on white – a few of the white cake rock beach prints and the oh so cute Alexander Henry spotted owls on white. There are a few others mixed in and several solids in coordinating colors.

I went for strips of varying widths, and pieced in a few blocks of other prints to add some extra interest. When I took it out to photograph the top a few weeks ago, I thought it looked so good outside that I thought I might use it as a picnic quilt. Never mind that I can’t remember the last time I went on a picnic — maybe having a picnic quilt will change that! Since I thought I might use it outside, I opted for a darker solid for the back, but spiced it up a bit with a few patchwork strips.

As for the quilting, I so enjoyed the straight and curved random lines on the mini quilt I made last week that I decided to do something similar… although it certainly wasn’t as easy with a quilt of this size! The lines wobble a bit here and there, but I’m ok with it…

I went with a nice navy binding, and I’m very pleased with the final result. I’ve taken to bringing it with me when we go anywhere, just in case I find myself wanting to lay on the grass!
